It is said that on Nike Tn's, the Air units were made using a layered-membrane made from two different polymers, laminated together. That membrane has the ability to inflate itself. The membrane materials allow oxygen and nitrogen to pass through, while larger molecules of inert gas remain trapped inside. Are you still with me? Oxygen’s will also get in over time until the levels have balanced inside and out. The red circles around the soles are called hemispheres. After impact they prevent that your foot rolls inwards, lessening the pronation (and I think a lot of people would benefit from that). Therefore the Air pressure in the heel could be lowered, giving more cushioning without compromizing the stability.
